Director Biography

Brian Gaukel is a filmmaker, director, cinematographer, and visual storyteller whose work sits at the intersection of music, storytelling, and human connection. With deep roots in choral music and the performing arts, Gaukel brings an insider’s perspective to filmmaking—creating visually rich documentaries and performance films that illuminate the transformative power of shared artistic experiences.

As both director and director of photography on many of his projects, Gaukel’s filmmaking style blends cinematic visual storytelling with intimate, character-driven narratives. His work often explores themes of excellence, belonging, mentorship, identity, and the profound ways people connect through art and shared purpose. Since 2019, he has developed concert films, projection design, and immersive visual media for live performance at Carnegie Hall, creating visual experiences that extend storytelling beyond the screen and into the concert hall.

Gaukel has filmed choirs and musical organizations on six continents and in more than 20 countries, capturing performances and stories in some of the world’s most celebrated venues, including Dvořák Hall in Prague, the Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, and Funkhaus Berlin. Through Brian Gaukel Productions, his work spans feature documentaries, concert films, and arts-centered storytelling projects that bridge disciplines and communities.

Gaukel directed and filmed We Are the Music Makers, a feature documentary chronicling the life and legacy of renowned conductor Jerry Blackstone and the influence of choral music on generations of singers and educators. The film was selected for three film festivals prior to the widespread disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. He later directed Choral Singing in America: Nurturing the Country’s Soul, a sweeping exploration of communal singing across the United States through more than 100 interviews and performances spanning schools, churches, healthcare settings, community ensembles, and professional organizations.

His forthcoming documentary, The Conductor and the Surgeon, explores excellence, mentorship, and mastery through the intersecting worlds of music and medicine. Whether behind the camera as director of photography or leading projects from concept through completion, Gaukel seeks to capture the emotional spaces where artistry and humanity meet.
